Calicut Paragon, Al Karama – Dubai

About:

An authentic place for South Indian (Kerala) coastal cuisine, they also serve North Indian food. This restaurant has been there since many years and has managed to keep up to its reputation.

Its located opposite Lulu Hypermarket (Al Karama) and has plenty of parking (paid) place available. Its suitable for families to visit this restaurant.

Ambience:

A bit clustered and overcrowded with tables which I presume is to maximize on the seating capacity. The restaurant is clean, well ventilated and well lit but this place does tend to get a bit noisy that can be annoying at times.

Food:

Visiting a place that actually specializes is coastal cuisine from Kerala, I decided to give the local food a try and ordered for a #FishMangoCurry which is a preparation made of tangy raw mango, spices and coconut milk. I was actually expecting a burst of flavours packed into this curry as it is suppose to be tangy, spicy and creamy because of the coconut milk.

The curry did have body and texture to it, it was thick and creamy, it did not have the coarse texture that coconut based curries normally have, however it did lack some distinctive tangy taste but was still palatable. Since it was a fish curry, it was served with three pieces (2 small & 1 medium) of very fresh Kingfish, the curry was loaded with green chilies, (non spicy ones) curry leaves which is an integral ingredient in Keralite cuisine and lots of ginger julienne. The best option is to have the curry with steam rice or appams, these are rice pancakes.

Papudams,  spicy coconut chutney and mango pickle were served as accompaniments with the food. At the end I was served with #ElaneerPayasma , its was an excellent Payasam made of jaggery, rice and shreds of coconut which was served hot (was hoping i would get more)

Service:

Very average service, don’t expect the staff t go the extra mile as its a very basic restaurant, having said that the staff were polite and attentive but can have a language barrier as they are fluent in the South Indian languages but not too fluent in English or Hindi.
